Service Design Melbourne

building a community of interest and practice in service design

About

Service Design Network Melbourne mission statement

The purpose of the Service Design Network Melbourne (SDNMelbourne) is to foster and support knowledge sharing on human-centred approaches and outcomes of design through invited speakers, workshops and informal conversations. It is a non-commercial network, focusing on building a community of interest and practice in this area to actively create a space for idea exchange and learn about projects, challenges and opportunities in Australia. It practices and promotes collaboration and collegiality across diverse fields in design, marketing, management, digital technology as well as the academic, business, government and public sectors. In doing so, it aims to provide exposure to and promote the contribution of a holistic approach to Service Design, which includes social innovation, human-centred design and  systemic design thinking, that can benefit the public at large.

Becoming a member does not require any subscription but there are some events that may ask attendees to cover the cost of. Events are hosted randomly and rotationally at various public or private venues. SDNMelbourne welcomes any ideas, contributions, facilitation and participation from all its diverse membership.

SDNMelbourne is also associated with the Sydney based Service Design Network, the International Network of Service Design and Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability lab Melbourne (DESIS).

A general introduction to the network was given during a talk at SD12 conference in Melbourne.

The network 'committee'

The Service Design Network in Melbourne is facilitated by a group of committed and passionate individuals. This group's responsibility is to:
  • manage resources and contribute ideas, time and knowledge for organising future activities
  • support one another in pushing and promoting what this network could do
  • exposing the agency of this network to outside fields / networks
  • undertake administrative tasks in managing the website
This is a 'committee' in inverted commas because, it's not the usual dull and boring meetings - instead our gatherings are engaging, robust and creative - so that our investment in time and energy can be rewarding to ourselves individually as well as contribute to the collective.

The current members from 2011-2012 include (in alphabetical order):

The members will rotate each year - so every year we recruit new members and others can exit. In this way, we can retain knowledge of the 'past' and inject 'fresh' ideas into the group (whilst preventing burn-outs!)
Anyone interested in being more active in this community and become a 'committee' member in the future, please message 'service design melbourne' via the member's page.
